Independent GLP laboratory testing demonstrates rapid reduction of aerosolized viral surrogates using the Defend 1050.

Novaerus, an Irish medical technology brand under WellAir, announced independent testing results for its most powerful portable air disinfection unit, the Defend 1050. Independent testing conducted by Aerosol Research and Engineering (ARE) Laboratories verified that the device achieves a 99.99% reduction of aerosolized MS2 Bacteriophage (a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2) in just 15 minutes.*

Multi-Stage Air Disinfection and Filtration

The Defend 1050 combines rapid airborne pathogen inactivation with medical-grade air purification in a single portable device designed for continuous protection in high-risk clinical environments.

The unit utilizes patented NanoStrike™ technology paired with a triple-stage filtration system engineered by Camfil®. Because NanoStrike is a rapid, non-selective inactivating technology, it neutralizes airborne viruses 24/7 without creating harmful byproducts, minimizing the risk of infectious outbreaks in shared indoor spaces.

As public health guidance increasingly recognizes aerosolized viral particles as a major transmission vector for airborne pathogens like SARS-CoV-2, continuous, high-volume air disinfection plays a vital role in preventing healthcare-associated transmission.

Independent Bioaerosol Chamber Testing

To evaluate efficacy against small viral aerosols, Aerosol Research and Engineering (ARE) Laboratories—a GLP-certified facility in the United States—conducted controlled bioaerosol chamber trials.

ARE Laboratories Test Protocol & Results:

  • Testing Environment: Sealed 16m³ Bioaerosol Test Chamber (simulating a standard clinical or patient room).
  • Target Challenge: Aerosolized MS2 Bacteriophage (a viral RNA bacteriophage standard surrogate for influenza and SARS-CoV-2).
  • Speed of Inactivation: Achieved an average 4.14 net LOG reduction in 15 minutes, equating to a 99.99% reduction in airborne viral surrogate.*

“The methods used by GLP labs like Aerosol Research and Engineering are informed by established consensus standards,” said Dr. Kevin Devlin, CEO at WellAir. “These results confirm how effectively the Defend 1050 reduces viral load in ambient air.”

Global Regulatory Recognition & Hospital Adoption

The efficacy of the Defend 1050 has also been registered on China’s National Online Record Information Service Platform for Disinfection Products following independent evaluation against national healthcare hygiene standards.

“Infection can spread through air currents, direct surface contact, or indirect touch,” said Dr. Felipe Soberon, Chief Technology Officer at WellAir. “These test results prove the Defend 1050 is ideal for mitigating airborne transmission risks and reducing bioburden on surrounding surfaces and hands.”

To support frontline pandemic response, Novaerus donated air disinfection units—including Defend 1050 systems—to Wuhan Xincheng Hospital and Wuhan Third People’s Hospital.

Today, hospitals worldwide rely on Novaerus technology to reinforce traditional hand hygiene and surface cleaning protocols.
